Criminal Investigations
There are two major categories of crimes investigated by Criminal Investigations. They are crimes committed against property and crimes committed against persons. Property crimes consist primarily of thefts, burglaries, auto theft and vandalism. Crimes committed against persons consist of such crimes as assaults and robberies. Investigators assigned in these areas conduct extensive criminal investigations, respond to major crime scenes and provide technical advice as needed. Investigators interview victims, witnesses and suspects prior to presenting cases for criminal prosecution.
Youth and Special Services
Investigators assigned to Youth and Special Services are responsible for the in-depth investigation of any criminal report or allegation involving the physical or emotional abuse of a child, a dependent adult, an elderly victim, or the victim of any sex related crime. These crimes are commonly referred to as Child Abuse, Elder Abuse, Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes.
The emotional aspect of sexual assault or family based violence requires that the investigative response include a holistic approach to the citizens who have been victimized or impacted by these crimes. Therefore, investigators working on these cases assist victims and witnesses with referrals to counseling and community-based services to aid in their recovery, ability to negotiate the judicial system, and to prevent future victimization. We believe this approach has improved the level of service we provide, though investigations within this detail are necessarily complex, labor intensive and time consuming.
Economic Crimes
Investigators assigned to economic crimes are responsible for the criminal investigation of check forgery, fraudulent use of stolen credit cards and fraudulently obtained credit cards. Additionally, investigators handle identity theft involving the fraudulent use of a person's personal information such as names, Social Security Numbers and dates of birth to obtain goods and/or credit.
